Working with credit cards

When a candidate pays with a credit card, Registration Manager verifies the credit card information, such as whether the number you entered contains the correct number of digits, begins with the correct character or number (like "4" for VISA cards), and whether the card has an expiration date. Registration Manager also contains an online credit card verification feature that allows Pearson VUE to quickly determine whether a candidate’s credit card is valid and whether it can cover the cost of the order.

This verification takes place behind the scenes after you select the payment type (VISA, MasterCard, or American Express), enter the credit card information, and then click Save in Registration Manager. The system then verifies the credit card’s validity by automatically contacting the credit card company.

The following table provides details on the different messages that can appear after a credit card verification. Refer to the guidelines and scripts in the table when you see one of the messages.

Message

Description and guidelines

Order Successfully Entered

In most cases, this message states that the credit card was successfully entered. Though the message does not say that the credit card was approved, the card has been successfully approved for the purchase.

Card Expired

This message states that you need to enter another card number. It appears if the credit card is expired or if the card information was not entered correctly. Verify that the information was entered correctly. If it was, ask the candidate if he or she has another card that can be used to place the order. Refer to the following script to help you with the process:

Test center:

I’m getting a message here stating that this card is expired. Let’s double-check the card information I entered to make sure it’s correct.

Next, read the card number and expiration date to the candidate and verify that it’s correct.

Candidate:

Responds.

Test center:

If the information is correct or you continue to receive the message after making any corrections, explain this to the candidate:

You may need to contact your credit card company to clear this up. In the meantime, would you like to give me a different card number for this order?

Candidate:

I do have another credit card you can use.

Or

This is my only credit card. I just used it and don’t see what could be wrong.

Test center:

If the candidate provides another card number, select the type of card from the Payment Type drop-down list, and then enter the card's number, expiration date, and the name on the card.

If the candidate refuses to provide another card number, say this to the candidate:

It’s probably just a mix-up that the company can take care of if you call them. In the meantime, I will save the information you've given me while you call the credit card company. Contact us later to complete the order.

Card Not Validated

This message states that the candidate needs to contact his or her credit card company. It appears for a variety of reasons and does not necessarily mean that the candidate has over-extended on the card. For example, it may be possible that the candidate has not yet received a new card with a new expiration date.

In any case, it is important to try to put the candidate at ease because he or she will likely be embarrassed. Ask the candidate if he or she has another card that can be used to place the order. Refer to the following script to help you with the process:

Test center:

I’m getting a message stating that you need to contact your credit card company before you can use the card. Sometimes the companies do random security checks.

Candidate:

Can’t you just check for me and find out what the problem is?

Test center:

Sorry, but for privacy reasons this is the only information we’re given. Would you like to use a different card number for this order?

If the candidate provides another number, enter that number and continue the process for completing the order.

Candidate:

This is my only credit card. I just used it and don’t see what could be wrong.

Test center:

It’s probably just a mix-up that the company can take care of if you call them. In the meantime, I will save the information you've given me while you call the credit card company. Contact us later to complete the order.

Candidate needs to contact the VUE Registration Center

The testing system prevents certain candidate registrations from being made and prevents certain credit cards from being used. These features are referred to as candidate registration blocking and credit card blocking. For example, an exam sponsor might ask Pearson VUE to prevent a certain candidate from scheduling exam appointments because of cheating incidents that have occurred. With credit card blocking, Pearson VUE can prevent a specific credit card number from being used.

All blocks are set up by Pearson VUE. Whenever a candidate attempts to schedule or reschedule an appointment, the testing system automatically checks whether any blocks are in effect when the registration is saved. It is possible for more than one type of block to be in effect for a particular candidate. If a block is in effect, one of the following messages appears:

  • Registrations are currently not permitted for <Candidate Name> at this test center. Please direct any questions to your VUE Registration Center.

  • Registrations are currently not permitted for <Candidate Name>. Please direct any questions to your VUE Registration Center.

  • <Exam Sponsor Name> registrations are currently not permitted for <Candidate Name>. Please direct any questions to your VUE Registration Center.

  • The credit card selected for payment cannot be used at VUE. Please contact your VUE Registration Center.

  • A previous transaction on this credit card was rejected. The card cannot be used at VUE until the previously rejected transaction is paid. Please contact your VUE Registration Center.

If you receive one of these messages while registering a candidate, tell the candidate that the system is not accepting the registration and ask him or her to contact the call center. Do not describe or explain the message in detail. There are many reasons why these messages appear, so do not provide further details in order to prevent you from offending the candidate or giving him or her the wrong information. When the candidate contacts the call center, a call center agent will be able to explain further the reason for the block.

Credit card cannot be used as payment in the candidate’s country

Pearson VUE can prevent credit cards from being used as payment in certain countries. If a message notifies you that the card cannot be used as payment in the candidate's country, tell the candidate that Pearson VUE cannot accept credit cards from that country.
